In my first piece for Refinery29 UK, published in August, I looked at the secret heartbreak of miscarrying in your 20s. One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, but it remains a really taboo subject. For all the women I spoke to, having a miscarriage so young was an isolating time. They had no one they really felt they could speak to about their situation. Most of their friends were still more interested in going out than settling down and having babies. Then came the unhelpful comments – “you’re young, you’ve still got plenty of time” or “at least it happened early”.
Thank you so much to Amy, Rachel and Nena for sharing your stories with me. I hope your words can help to raise awareness and make other young women feel less alone. Many thanks also to Tommy’s and the National Miscarriage Association for their help in putting this feature together.
